Gove Peninsula Motel

Located in East Arnhem Region of the Northern Territory of Australia.

Welcome to our site.

Thank you for taking the time to have a browse, should you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact us either by phone or email.  We would like to give you a brief outline of our establishment and a little bit of local knowledge just to get you started.  As I'm sure you are aware visitors to Nhulunbuy with the exception of those flying in and staying within the town lease require permission to either visit or pass through aboriginal land.  More information regarding these permits is available further on.  If you are unsure, both the NLC and Dhimurru are available for advice on your requirements.

Whether your interests are business, sightseeing, fishing/diving/boating, ecotourism, cultural arts and crafts, 4 wheel driving or camping on our fabulous beaches Gove is the hub for all these activities.  The township servicing our area is called NHULUNBUY and is on the Gove Peninsula in the East Arnhem region of Arnhemland in the Northern Territory. Gove enjoy’s a tropical climate averaging 28°C May-September and 30—33°C October-April.  Seasonal rains fall mainly from Dec-April (our wet season).

We invite you to experience Gove and the region whilst staying with us in our immaculately presented 19 room motel.  Our self contained, air conditioned spacious rooms allow you a comfortable base whilst exploring our area and our inground saltwater pool is  great way to unwind after a busy day.

Regular flights depart daily from Darwin and Cairns.  A shuttle meets all commercial flights and will drop you to our door for a modest charge.  You may also arrange your departure pick up at that time.

The Northern Land Council (NLC) manages the access road from Katherine to Gove for the various clans on whose land the road is located and issues the necessary permit. Permits must be arranged prior to the trip.  It is a requirement of your permit that you spend the first night in Gove (prior to camping, etc) with either family, friends or an accommodation venue.  The Dhimurru Land Management Aboriginal Corporation manages estates on behalf of the traditional owners of the land. These owners have identified areas available for recreation by Balanda (any non-aboriginal person/s) on the Gove Peninsula. Access to estates for recreation has been provided by traditional landowners since the township of Nhulunbuy began. Dhimurru is responsible for the management of these recreation permits.

Nhulunbuy boasts 2 highly regarded Aboriginal Arts and Crafts centres. One is located at Yirrkala, the Buku-Larrnggay Mulka Art Centre and Crafts Museum and the other Nambara Arts and Crafts is located a short drive from the motel.  The township of Nhulunbuy has grown over the past 25 years servicing the alumina mining and processing plant. Alcan Gove provides free mine tours of a Friday morning (bookings required).  Gove has a history dating back to WWII with an airport and two operational air squadrons being located here during the war. A historical display regarding this key defence location is displayed at the airport.

Our town has all the modern amenities  you may require while travelling or visiting for work, e.g. supermarkets, news agency, church services, primary schools and a high school, childcare facilities, fire, ambulance, police, doctor, dentist, pharmacy and hospital.  With the Yacht Club, the Surf Club, the Arnhem Club, the Golf Club and the local hotel there are several places for meals and a quiet drink. The views from the surf club and the yacht club are quite spectacular and worth a look.  An information centre is located with the Traveland office in the Town Centre.
